The Concept
Part of the triptych series Bound Angels, this original pencil work serves as the narrative’s genesis. It depicts the moment the divine is “crowned” by human suffering. Unlike the skeletal decay seen in the second piece, the angel here is still vibrantly whole, emphasizing the tragedy of her impending transformation.
The central motif is the crown: a complex halo of barbed wire and thorns, weighed down by heavy, fruit-like orbs that symbolize the “fruits of mortality.” Her tilted head and closed eyes suggest a soul bracing for the descent, making The Sovereign Captive a profound study of martyrdom and the loss of innocence.
