The Concept

Part of the triptych series Bound Angels, this original pencil work serves as a visceral study of loss and the limitations of human will. While the first piece in the series established the state of captivity, The Unravelling Divine focuses on the tragedy of disappearance.

The central conflict is told through the hands: the man’s hand is firm, gloved, and grounded in the physical world of the Renaissance; the angel’s hands are fading, losing their grip on reality as she dissolves into a veil of smoke and pencil lead. She is no longer a creature of flight—her wings are gone, replaced by a haunting, circular cage of thorns and thread that holds her suspended but empty.
